Chapter Eleven

Another broken flowerpot was in the middle of the shop when I made it downstairs the next morning, bleary-eyed and in desperate need of caffeine. I swore loudly when I spotted the shards of pottery and Flapjack melted into view. “Looks like Gwenie and Sir Bumbles-a-lot have some explaining to do,” he said.

“Where were you?” I asked.

“I’m not part of your little neighborhood watch, remember?”

I frowned. “Why is that? You have some kind of double life going on? Where have you been disappearing to lately?”

“Scarlet? Are you down here?”

I turned at Lucas’s voice just as he finished descending the staircase. “Did I wake you? I was trying to slip out unnoticed.”

“No, my alarm went off. I forgot to turn it off last night.” He ran a hand through his sandy brown hair and looked around the studio. “Are you working?”

“I need to get the deliveries loaded up for Lizzie so she can do a round before we open.” I glanced over my shoulder at the broken pot. “Any chance you’re going to be able to get those security cameras up today?”

“Sure.”

“That would be great.” I gestured at the shards of pottery. “My vandal struck again sometime last night.”

Concern etched into the lines around Lucas’s mouth and his shoulders shifted back as he strode to the front door. “You’re sure this is a ghost, not a person?” he asked as he inspected the door and front windows for any signs of damage.

I squatted down beside the shards. “Well, either it’s a ghost or it’s someone with a key and a really bizarre aversion to these African violet planters.”

“Right.” He nodded, his mouth still a tense, all-business line. “But ghosts won’t show up on a security feed, will they?”

“To a quote-unquote normal person, no, a ghost wouldn’t show up on security footage,” I replied. “Luckily for me, I’m a good distance from normal.”

That broke Lucas’s hard facade and he smiled at me. “Good thing, too. Normal’s overrated.”

“Highly,” I agreed.

He bent to help pick up the last of the mess. When the broken pot was cleared, I went to the computer to once again adjust the inventory. Lucas pointed at the ceiling. “Let me get dressed and then I’ll run out for coffee. Siren’s Song is open this early on a Saturday, right?”

I nodded. “Sure is.”

Lucas disappeared into the back and the fireproof door shut a few seconds later. I turned to Flapjack. “Gwen and Hayward were the ones on patrol last night?”

The cat nodded. “Of course, they might have gotten distracted.”

“Seriously, they’re worse than teenagers!” I groaned. “Where are they now?”

Flapjack swished his tail. “Not that it’s my job to keep tabs on them, but I happen to know they’re taking a morning stroll,” he replied, adding a faux-British flare to the words. “I passed them on my way here.”

“You’re just getting in?” I frowned at him, growing even more concerned over what kind of nighttime antics he might be up to.

“Yes, and I’m not staying for long. Thistle has a fish fry going on this afternoon and I don’t want to miss any of the prep.
